Food additives are used to preserve food and/or improve its taste, appearance, quality and stability. Additives play an important part in food supply ensuring that food is safe and meets customer needs.
Preservatives are one type of food additive that are used to prolong the shelf life of food by preventing deterioration.
The Bakers Delight Everyday Classics and Continental range are preservative free – they do not contain any preservatives, including 282 which can affect certain people.
For details on each Bakers Delight product, please view the nutritional panel of each product found here on the website. All Bakers Delight products meet the guidelines set by Food Standards Australia New Zealand on the use of safe additives.
Some foods can cause severe allergic reactions in some people – this is known as anaphylaxis. Foods such as peanuts, tree nuts (e.g. cashews, almonds, walnuts), shellfish, finned fish, milk, eggs, sesame, soybean and their products may cause severe allergic reactions and must be declared on labels or available to customers. Gluten is also included in this list as a caution for those with coeliac disease.
In addition, foods containing sulphites must be declared in the ingredients list on the ‘What’s in it’ when present in foods in concentrations of 10 milligrams per kilogram or more of added sulphites. This is the level that may trigger asthma attacks in some asthmatics.
The following allergenic ingredients are used in our bakeries:
Crustacea, fish and peanut ingredients are not used in our bakeries however, please be advised that our suppliers have indicated that some ingredients may contain these allergens.
For specific allergen information please refer to the ingredients section within the individual products on the Bakers Delight website.
Bakers Delight has reduced the salt levels of our traditional white, wholemeal and country grain ranges. We also offer a lower salt alternative in our Cape Seed range with salt levels below industry targets. We continue to look for opportunities to reduce salt levels across our range.
Bakers Delight use wheat based flour, therefore all products contain gluten. We pride ourselves on baking our bread from scratch everyday using raw ingredients.
Unfortunately, we are unable to produce gluten or wheat free bread because of the high risk of cross contamination between products.
As soy is an allergen widely used in our bakeries, we are legally required to list it in all of our ingredient listings on our website. Soy Flour is a natural ingredient that helps with the baking process and the delivery of natural enzymes. It is only used in very small quantities in our bakeries.
Due to the scratch baking method used in our bakeries, where products are prepared and baked from raw ingredients, we cannot guarantee that any product will be free of any ingredient used.
Here is the complete list of our ranges that don’t contain any soy:
Yeast is an important part of bread making. It ferments sugars and produces a gas which enables the bread to rise.
Bakers yeast is an ingredient in all products made at Bakers Delight the only exceptions being scones and our Authentic Sourdough.
The Authentic Sourdough products are made using traditional bread making methods. This means that the Authentic Sourdough doesn’t contain any bakers yeast; it is made using a culture of wild yeasts and bacteria which naturally occur in the air and flour. The culture continually ferments in flour and water and is used each time the sourdough is baked.
Yes, Bakers Delight bake many products that are suitable for Vegans and Vegetarians.
Many products contain ingredients derived from animals including ham, bacon, salami, eggs, cheese and milk as detailed in our Ingredients panel with the specific product here on our website.
Please keep in mind that our products are prepared from scratch and whilst all care is taken there may be cross over between products.
All of our bakeries promise customers that their bread is baked from scratch every day. To commit to this promise, all surplus products must be removed from the bakery at the end of trade.
Where possible, Bakers Delight franchisees donate surplus bread to local charities and community groups across Australia and New Zealand. Donations are possible because of the relationships built between a bakery and the local community, and each bakery provides product to support those in need in their local area. We have systems in place to minimise the left over bread at the end of each day, and make every effort to ensure fresh baked bread is going to those who need it most.
In some situations, bread cannot be donated due to a charity party being unable to collect or not requiring product on the day. Certain products, such as those that contain meat or custard cannot be donated. Bakers Delight welcomes new partners who may have a need for product, and we ask you contact your local Bakers Delight to make an arrangement or alternatively let us know using the following form.
You certainly can! It would be best to give them a call and place your order directly with the bakery. Your local Bakers Delight contact number can be found here.
Bakers Delight conducts regular price reviews for all products. These reviews take into consideration the ingredient and operational costs that our bakeries are exposed to over the reviewed period.
As our bakeries are individually franchised, current legislation restrict franchisees from price fixing. As such we can only offer a Recommended Retail Price (RRP) to our franchisees. The bakeries can then choose to adopt these prices or apply an alternate pricing structure based on their own business needs.
Our mandatory products are available across all of our bakeries. Some products are optional for bakeries to produce and therefore it is at the discretion of the Franchisee to determine their production needs. If there is a certain product you are after please contact our Customer Relations team and they will be able to advise which bakeries are baking the product.
Our reusable plastic bags are available at all of our bakery locations. These bags are made from a thicker, sturdier plastic and have been specially designed to be strong enough for multiple use, while using the least amount of plastic as possible. The second option is a larger, more stylish tote bag made of natural fibres for customers to keep in their car and bring into their local bakery each time they visit.
Every bag has an environmental impact, however after examining the research, we are confident that plastic carry bags come out well in front of paper carry bags, for their lower overall environmental impact. Numerous Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies have shown:
Our bakeries are individually franchised, given this each Franchisee monitors and maintains their own employment needs. To apply for a position, you will need to contact the bakery directly. You can locate their contact details here.

All Bakers Delight breads are suitable to freeze and can be stored in the freezer for up to four months. For maximum freshness, place the bread in a freezer bag, remove as much air as you can and then seal it.
When you’re ready to thaw, you’ve got a couple of options; remove the seal and leave it to thaw naturally and slowly in its packaging, or, if you’ve got hungry mouths to feed, remove it from the bag, wrap it in paper towel and put it in the microwave on high for bursts of 10 seconds until it’s perfectly soft and ready to eat. Be careful not to overheat.
Crusty loaves and rolls, like our delicious artisan range, are best stored in a paper bag and eaten fresh on the day they’re baked (just try and resist). Our other soft breads, rolls, buns and scones should be stored at room temperature in a plastic bag, bread bag, or in a well-ventilated bread bin. This will stop the bread from drying out and keep it fresh for days.

We can advise that none of our products contain genetically modified ingredients including our wheat. We work closely with our suppliers to ensure that all ingredients supplied to Bakers Delight comply with the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Code.
